Children’s Play, Learning and Development (CPLD)

The BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Award in Children’s Play, Learning and Development provides the knowledge, understanding and skills to progress to other level 2 or level 3 vocational qualifications, or apprenticeships within the early years and health and social care sectors. Studying this also provides the opportunity to develop interpersonal skills, working with others, problem solving, independent study and personal, learning and thinking skills.

The subject ensures that learners develop a broad and comprehensive understanding of the:

● child development from birth up to eight years

● play as a route of children’s learning, which forms the basis of early years frameworks, such as the Early Years Foundation Stage (England) and Foundation Phase (Wales

● inclusive practice and empowering children, as well as the key person within early years The subject is enriched using case-study materials and scenarios, referring to journals or magazines for articles relevant to the sector, and possibly visiting local early years settings, such as nurseries or play groups
